Troubleshooting

What should I do if my tap handle is stiff or won't turn?

A stiff tap handle is typically caused by mineral deposits, worn seals, or corrosion around the cartridge spindle. Cleaning or replacing the cartridge usually resolves the issue.

If you are experiencing a tight or seized handle, grinding or squeaking when turning, or a tap that doesn’t fully close, the following steps can help to resolve the issue:

  1. Isolate both water supplies
  2. Remove the handle and trim
  3. Clean visible scale from the cartridge using vinegar or descaler
  4. Apply a small amount of silicone grease
  5. Reassemble and check the movement

If the handle is still stiff, you may need to replace the cartridge. New cartridges can be purchased from our spares website.

Operate the tap weekly to keep seals lubricated and prevent stiffness from infrequent use.
