The story behind

Burlington

Burlington was founded in 2006 by Patrick Riley and Tim Powell, with a simple but ambitious aim:
to bring yesterday's beautiful bathroom designs together with today's technology.

Unexpected inspiration

At the time, the founders felt that traditional bathroom design in the UK had lost something along the way... that the quality and craftsmanship of classic styling was no longer being matched by the products available. The spark for change came from an unexpected source: two bathroom catalogues from the 1800s from Twyford and Armitage Shanks, given to Patrick by his father-in-law. Leafing through them revealed original features that had long since disappeared from the market, among them, the invisible overflow and waste design that remains part of the Burlington range to this day (Product Code: W9).

Yesterday's designs, today's technology

From these origins, Burlington set out to do something different, pair genuinely traditional design with modern engineering and efficiency, filling a gap the founders saw missing from the UK market. That founding principle still shapes every product we make. For example, the bottom of our furniture plinths are made from MDF, so they resist water damage from wet bathroom floors where a traditional wooden plinth would fail. Our dual-flush technology brings water efficiency to classic sanitaryware without compromising on heritage styling. And within our traditional-style showers, we fit aerators that increase flow and give a fuller stream while using less water. Proof that period design and modern performance aren't mutually exclusive!

It's this balance, honouring the past while building for the future, that continues to define Burlington today.
